JCBC Winter Party – Saturday 12/15 (and NO December Meeting)

A reminder that as usual, we are not having our regularly scheduled meeting in December. Instead, we hope to see you all at a party!

When: Saturday, 12/15 @ 6PM
Where: Kyle & Sarah’s House, by Summit Ave & Vroom St, Jersey City (a few blocks from the Journal Square PATH)
Email jerseycitybrewclub@gmail.com for the exact address, or check the Facebook Event page

There will be several kegs on tap, but feel free to bring some food and drink of your own – especially homebrew!

10/15 Meeting – Hot Sauce! 10/21 – Hop & Malt Tasting

October’s meeting will be at our usual time and place – 7:30PM at Atlas Public House in the back room. This month our meeting’s theme is chili peppers! During last month’s meeting we discovered that several members are growing chili peppers and making hot sauces and other fun things. If you have some hot sauce, chili paste, or other fun spicy stuff you’ve made, please bring some to share at this month’s meeting!

This month’s Brewer’s Duel is a Peach Saison, and we’ll be trying out a new judging sheet which intends to give better feedback to the brewers.

Finally, the Sunday after our meeting (10/21 @ 2pm) the club will be hosting a Hop and Malt Tasting. This will be a great sensory training experiment and recipe formulation learning experience. We are going to dry hop lager with different hops and compare the aroma and flavor profiles. We’ll also steep different base and specialty malts and see what flavor profiles different malts add to a beer.

This event will be hosted at Nick’s house in Bayonne, on West 36th St. For the exact address, please check the Facebook invite or email jerseycitybrewclub@gmail.com.

September 17th JCBC Meeting – Guest Speaker John Holl

This month’s meeting will be at our usual time and place – Atlas Pub at 7:30PM. We do not have a brewer’s duel to judge this month, but will be doing our usual sharing and sampling. We’ll also discuss a new scoring system for our monthly challenges and plan upcoming events, such as our Spring Brewery Bus Trip and a hop & malt tasting educational event on October 14th.

Our guest speaker this month is John Holl – editor of Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine, and author of The American Craft Beer Cookbook, and co-host of the Steal This Beer podcast.

Brooklyn Brewery Walkabout Saturday 8/25

We’re going to have a casual walkabout to a few breweries in Brooklyn on what’s hopefully a sunny day. Feel free to invite friends and especially other homebrewers.

There’s no cost, beyond whatever you want to eat and drink. We’re meeting around noon at Threes Brewing which is by the Union St subway station. We’ll leave Threes at around 1:30PM so just aim to get there with enough time to enjoy a beer.

Threes Brewing
Strong Rope Brewery
Other Half Brewing
Folksbier Brauerei

Spots we maybe will hit up depending on how people feel:
Sixpoint Brewing
Van Brunt Stillhouse (Distillery)

Discuss the event on Facebook, or visit our new Slack channel

June 18 Meeting – Show & Tell!

We’ve got a jam packed meeting for you guys this month! Come join us at Atlas Public House for a chat on sanitizing/ sterilizing best practices with Brant from Departed Soles.

Stay for a Show and Tell – bring anything interesting or cool related to home brewing to show off to the group. Something you made, something you found, something you bought. Plus we’ll have our New England IPA brewers duel.

And lastly, we’ll be doing a bit more planning for our September Walking Tour, as well as some more casual events over the summer. Hope to see you there!

We need hosts for our September Walking Tour

Hey everyone, if you’re interested in hosting for our club’s Walking Tour please email us at jerseycitybrewclub@gmail.com. We are looking to schedule this for early or mid September. If you have not participated before, we usually have two groups of 20 people and visit four locations. You should be in Jersey City, Hoboken, or Bayonne and be accessible by public transportation preferably. It’s a nice day of walking, drinking, talking, and (hopefully) sunny weather.

The club provides snacks, cups, ice, and can provide additional beer if needed. It’s a fun way to show off your brewing setup and your beers on tap, and it’s a great fundraiser for the club.

Bottling Day for the 100 Hop Group Brew

We actually ended up with 102 hops, because we are bad at counting. Bottling day will be Thursday May 10th, at Craig’s house (if you came to brew day, it is the same location), by the intersection of 1st St and Madison Ave in Hoboken. Email jerseycitybrewclub@gmail.com or check out the facebook group.

As a reminder, if you helped out on brew day, you will get a bottle to take home, and if you help out on bottling day you’ll get another bottle to take home. The rest of the bottles will be distributed or shared at another time.

March 19th Meeting – Kombucha, 100 Hop Brew, and more!

Our March 19th meeting will be at our usual spot. We have some exciting stuff this month, so do your best to attend.

Agenda for the March Meeting:

  • Nominations for officers (elections in April)
  • Kombucha Q&A with a professional kombucha maker. Please comment on Facebook or email us (jerseycitybrewclub@gmail.com) if you would like a free scoby, and comment if you have any topics you’d like to cover.
  • Brewery Bus Trip on April 7th (tell your friends to buy tickets!)
  • Group brew – 100 Hop IPA – scheduling and hop discussion
  • National Homebrew Competition submission period – shipping & drop-offs start 3/19. Kendall will be driving submissions out to Fifth Hammer Brewing if you want to avoid shipping.

Monday 2/20 Meeting Prep Notes

Don’t forget that our meetings are now on the 3rd MONDAY of each month at Atlas Pub (by the Grove St PATH). This month we’re going to discuss our upcoming Brewery Bus Trip on April 8th (member pre-sale starts this week). We’ll also talk about upcoming homebrew events like this weekend’s Fermentation Festival. This month we’ll also finally judge the Scotch Ales brewed for the Brewer’s Duel!
